Intent

At Bridge Learning Campus, learning a foreign language is a freedom from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. Lessons should foster pupils’ curiosity, develop their confidence and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in Spanish and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and writing. Spanish should provide a foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.

Key Skills and Dispositions:

Communication: Linguists are confident to listen and attempt to respond. Use the skills to problem solve and be able to communicate despite barriers. Mastery of this results in being able to speak and think simultaneously. Linguists express themselves verbally and non-verbally in order to be able to enter the adult and working world with confidence and feel equal to their peers. They are also able to use strategies to overcome weaknesses in spoken and written language.

Decoding and deciphering: Language does not exist in isolation. Students need to learn to make connections between their own language and MFL and spot patterns in language. Students learn transferable skills, improving their knowledge of grammar and vocabulary in other subjects as well as the target language.
