Culture Day – November 2024

At Bridge Learning Campus, we’ve had an amazing Culture Day! The theme for the day was Carnivals and Celebrations. Throughout the school, there were various activities, such as mask-making, using geography map skills to locate countries in the Caribbean, costume-making, and music lessons with drums.

We were joined by two special visitors.

Year 3 and 4 enjoyed a dance workshop, while Year 5 and 6 took part in a hair workshop. They explored different hair styles, products suited for various hair types, and the techniques for braiding hair. The children had the opportunity to practice braiding on each other before having their own hair styled.

Nursery

The children in nursery celebrated Culture Day by using a range of resources to make their own masks. There was lots of sticking and lots of feathers!

Year 3 & 4 Dance Workshop

Years 3 and 4 participated in a dance workshop where they learned Caribbean carnival dance moves to music. They had the chance to perform for each other and had a great time!

Pupil Voice

Adeola (Year 3): “It was calm, and I have never done anything like it. I want to be a dancer!”

Alexis (Year 3): “It was so much fun and the dance teacher was kin and cool.”

A’Myrah (Year 3): “I learnt new moves from carnivals.”

Shan Studios (Dance Teacher)-”All children were focused and engaged. It was fun to teach. The children really embraced Caribbean music and were able to learn a dance routine. The school environment is very calm and children’s behaviour is excellent. I really enjoyed myself. It is lovely to see a school in Bristol celebrating different cultures. Being from a Caribbean heritage, I would have loved something like this at school.”

Year 5 & 6

Years 5 and 6 took part in celebrating ‘Day of the Dead.’ They made Sugar Skulls (Calaveras de Azúcar), which symbolize the souls of the departed and are traditionally decorated with vibrant colours.

Hair Workshop

Years 5 and 6 also took part in a hair workshop where they explored various tools and products used for styling hair, as well as different hair styles. They practiced braiding each other’s hair before having their own hair braided.

Pupil Voice

Mayzie (Year 5): “Loved having my hair braided. I hope it never comes out!”

Boe (Year 6) “It was so fun having my hair braided, I learned how to look after hair.”

Sara (Year 6) “Now I know how to braid hair and what hairbrushes to use.”

Mel (Hairdresser): “Loved answering questions from the children. Children were able to practise different hair styles on each other and became confident with braiding hair. It was lovely to see children embracing other cultures/hair textures. It felt like a very inclusive school.”
